In 1531, at Tepeyac, a hill northwest of Mexico City appeared an apparition before a Christian Indian woodcutter named Juan Diego. The apparition identified herself as the virgin Holy Mary and requested a church be built at this site. When her request was made to the Bishop he asked for a sign. With out missing a beat the virgin Holy Mary sent Juan Diego to the hill in the middle of December to get some roses for the Bishop. The best part of the story is that after he delivered the roses to the Bishop the virgin Holy Mary left an image of her imprinted on the Juan Diego's tilma, a cactus fabric, which should have deteriorated but after 476 years the fabric has no signs of decay. To this day there is no scientific explanation. According to those that have seen it, the eyes appear to reflect what was in front of her in 1531 - a man with a beard.

What motivates our Virgin of Guadalupe design is her message of love and compassion, her promise to help and protect all mankind. The Mexican devotion to the Virgin of Guadalupe is moving. It remains strong today even as other aspects of Mexican society are changing. It reflects family, politics and religion. This is important because the current flag of Mexico utilizes the colors (green, white, and red) from the wing of the angel at the bottom of the original picture of the Virgin of Guadalupe - The first flag of Mexico.
